Development of low cost air filters for brick kilns

Emissions from brick kilns significantly contribute to pollution and health issues, with diseases like lung cancer and tuberculosis affecting millions, including 200,000 people in the Kathmandu Valley alone. Despite efforts to improve kiln designs with techniques like ZIG ZAG kilns, the transition remains costly and challenging for brick industries.

To address this, GD Labs, in collaboration with Ecocity Builders USA, is developing a low-cost air filtration system for Nepal’s brick industries. This innovative filter, made from locally available materials, uses adsorption to capture harmful particulates (PM10, PM2.5) and gases (SOx, NOx), offering an affordable solution to reduce emissions and improve public health.
