The project was funded by Asia Foundation whereby GD Labs was commissioned by Cleanup Nepal to develop and install smart bins in waling municipality. The developed smartbin had the basic segregation features wheras the smartness came from the bin being able to detect the bin being full and alerting the municipality office administrator to empty the bins. The bin was made to be solar powered. Installed with wheels, the bin was made mobile such that the bin could be transferred to a sun-lit location during the day. The IoT included a raspberry pi, with integrated GSMA module to communicate the bin being empty or full.
